Summary

The Risk Manager (RM)/Attorney reports to the CEO and implements the Risk Management Program to avoid or reduce loss to the organization. This position collaborates with others in the organization to develop and assure implementation of patient safety and high reliability initiatives. The RM develops and implements policies or organizational programs based on current legislation, national, statewide and local trends and make recommendations to the Executive Team to enhance overall patient/staff safety and risk mitigation.. He/she is responsible for the data management and educational components of risk management programs and services to include reporting of all analytics data and promoting patient/staff safety initiatives. This individual supports the Center’s objectives of enhancing and promoting patient safety and quality of care and minimizing loss to protect the assets of the organization

  • Knowledge of risk management systems, policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Skills in analyzing complex issues and making appropriate decisions under stressful conditions.
  • Knowledge of the organization’s claims management processes.
  • Ability to work independently and without direct supervision.
  • Ability to organize time, staff and materials in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Ability to understand and utilize computer software and applications required for the performance of position duties.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with persons from all educations, cultural, social and economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to effectively select, train and supervise staff.
  • Ability to present ideas in a clear, concise manner.
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, lift and intermittently move during the working day.

Qualifications/Education Requirements

Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited program in nursing, other allied health professional, health administration, business, or public health required. Master’s Degree preferred or a Juris Doctor degree. Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) or, must be obtained within two years of hire. Legal Nurse Consultant (LNCC) Certification and certification in Just Culture is preferred but not mandatory. Three (3) years current experience in a health care organization in risk management; knowledge in root cause analysis (RCA), adverse event management, and handling grievances and complaints is required. Additionally, an individual with Patient Safety, Just Culture, and High Reliability practices; experience in public speaking, providing presentations to medical personnel or teaching classes; experience and participation in quality improvement activities or committees (QI/QA); and experience in identifying the learning needs of healthcare professionals or physician office practices and providing education and training to help meet those needs is preferred. Must have a valid and current Mississippi driver’s license.

Core Competencies

  • Oversees litigation management program for the Center’s defense of any claim filed.
  • Responds to significant occurrences; reviews facts; reviews medical record/documentation; preserves any evidence; interviews staff.
  • Reviews event reports and identifies potential compensatory claims.
  • Organizes and facilitates Root Cause Analysis meeting with involved staff/providers to identify contributing factors and develop corrective action.
  • Receives and responds to patient complaints, compiles the data and prepares report.
  • Prepares Quarterly Report on Patient Safety, Complaints/Grievances, Risk Management.
  • Prepares Annual Report on Patient Safety, Complaints/Grievances, Risk Management, and Litigation Managements.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of staff orientation, in-service trainings, and other routine training in relations to include Culture of Safety, High Reliability, Risk management, standards of care, and other related areas.
  • Participates in the Organizational Performance Improvement Team (OPIT).
  • Participates in Committees as needed.
  • Acts as resource to all providers/staff regarding risk management and other current issues relating to provider/medical practice liability.
  • Provides guidance to staff/providers on clinical and other issues.
  • Performs other duties as requested/required.
  • Upholds, complies with, and enforces the Core Principles and Code of Conduct.
